Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah - is an American actor, rapper and acrobat. The work of Queen Latifah in television, film and music has won many accolades. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Her father and mother divorced after Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah was raised within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used at the time she reached the age of eight. It means very sensitive in Arabic. Latifah has always been tall, standing 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. At her school's game, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah became a beatboxer for the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah joined the original Flavor Unit group that included several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah in the early days, was impressed by her track. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's first single.
